During her working schedules, she managed to travel to many countries around the world. Dorcas was exposed to real time situations on what the girl child goes through in many societies. She decided to join in the FGM advocacy and fight for the rights of our village girls. Having been a victim of the same, she has spearheaded the FGM program within Condech Kenya since the inception.
Female Genital Mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) is a tradition rooted in most Kenyan tribe cultures and involves the procedures that intentionally alter or cause injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons. It is estimated that at least 200 million girls and women in 30 countries have been subjected to the practice. Over the past 40 years interest in curtailing the practice has intensified and several awareness and abandonment approaches have been deployed with the aim of influencing behavior change. While there has been an overall decline of FGM/C current progress is not sufficient to keep up with increasing population growth and the number of girls and women undergoing FGM/C is likely to rise significantly over the next 15 years. There has been a substantial shift in the culture of FGM/C and the number of families carrying out the practice in Kitui County has decreased in recent years. Codech Kenya has been actively involved in advocacy within Mwingi District and larger Kitui County especially on the following areas. (1) Reviving and supporting ARPs, (2) encouraging fathers’ involvement in the upbringing of their daughters,(3) inclusion of the topic of FGM/C in the current education curriculum in our public schools, (4) strengthening the community policing strategy -Nyumba Kumi, (5) and setting up community centers for orphans.

          Sylvester Maende
A business administration graduate and a law student, Sylvester is a balanced and charismatic young leader who has grown to like development since his childhood days.He has also worked as a news writer and a continuity presenter in ATG Radio .
